restoring our biblical and constitutional foundations

The Constitution Party’s 12 Step Program for “Recovering Republicans”

Kent D. Berdahl

1. We admitted we were powerless over the spiritual and social deception that had enslaved our intellects and wills—the naïve and foolish belief that the Republican Party is essentially a conservative political entity that, in fact, promotes a proper understanding of the Constitution, constitutional limited government, and the Rule of Law within the context of the Judeo-Christian moral ethic.

2. We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. After years of moral compromise and confusion as a result of our involvement with the Republican Party, we realized how intellectually irrational we had become.

3. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. We agreed that we could no longer stubbornly support a party that did not truly reflect our beliefs.

4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves, acknowledging the moral cowardice and unwillingness to take a stand for truth that had kept us in the Republican Party.

5. We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.  Our public confession of our trespasses against the spirit of freedom helped to free us from the shackles of political expediency.

6. We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.  We just kept telling ourselves, “I’m a Republican, but I can change.”

7. We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.  We gave up all of the rationalizations and excuses that we had used to justify our compromise.

8. We made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. Since this list would necessarily have to include the 40 million+ unborn children who have been slaughtered (at least partially) as a result of (our) Republican indolence and inaction, for the sake of brevity we limited it to post-birth individuals.

9. We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. We apologized to those thoughtful individuals whom we had castigated for supporting third parties and/or third party candidates.

10. We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. We resolved to be morally vigilant, ever on guard against the spirit of compromise and political expediency that would seek to entice us back into the Republican Party.

11. We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out—which does, of course, include rescuing our fellow Constitutionalists from the nefarious clutches of the Republican Party.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to Republicans, and to practice these principles in all our affairs—which is, of course, significantly easier to do in the nurturing and supportive embrace of the Constitution Party.
